Year of Establishment : 1942

History of the department : The department was set up during the pre Independence era and historians like Professor ABM Habibullah and Professor Makhanlal Roy Chowdhury taught in this department. Professor Mohibul Hasan also had a brief span of teaching experience here. The department essentially caters to Medieval History along with the history of Islam and Muslim politics. Thus the scope of the department is much wide. In the recent past eminent historians like Professor Sushil Chaudhury and Prof Aniruddha Ray taught in the department. Emminent Art and Gender Historian Professor Ratnabali Chatterjee had long association with the department as teacher and mentor. Catering to students’ over 300 and with wide interest areas of the present faculty the department has much scope. Presently it runs a Medieval Reading Circle. Through Monthly Lecture Series eminent as well as young scholars are given the same platform to give lectures for the students, researchers and faculty members. International and National workshop and seminars are held regularly over various subjects
