Year of Establishment : 1951 as Institute of Jute Technology (as an affiliated college of Calcutta University, Jointly established by University of Calcutta and Indian Jute Mills Association on a piece of demarcated land of Tarak Nath Palit Trust Prangan, Ballygunge Campus of University of Calcutta and managed by a Governing Council headed by the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, University of Calcutta, as the ex-officio President of the Governing Council. However, as per West Bengal Govt. Order No. 267/1(1)/EH/1U(C)-11-10 dated 25th May-2011 and subsequent Calcutta University syndicate Notification no. CSR/32/11 dt 27-06-2011, Institute of Jute Technology was converted as a Post Graduate Technology Department of University of Calcutta w.e.f 1st July 2011).
History of the department : University of Calcutta along with IJMA took a joint effort through the Syndicate of Calcutta University to establish an Institution on Education, Training and Research on Jute and Allied Fibre Technology , on a piece of land of Calcutta University taking an initial endowment from IJMA and constituting a Governing Council as Per University Syndicate resolution to govern this Institute as “Institute of Jute Technology” , while the foundation stone of this erstwhile Institute of Jute Technology (IJT) was laid by Mr. I.J. Kennedy, C.B.E., Chairman, IJMA on 20th February, 1947 and this Institute was inaugurated by Dr. B. C. Roy, Hon’ble Chief Minister, Govt. of West Bengal, on 10th March, 1951 to start the journey of sustainable Human Resource Development by conducting all level of Education, Training , Research and Technical services on Jute and Allied Fibre Technology and Management mainly to produce Supervisors, Managers, and R & D Personnel for Jute and allied industry. From 1951, IJT started a student’s Apprentice Course on Jute Technology, which was later converted as Post BSc PG Level Diploma in Jute Technology under University of Calcutta since 1975 with affiliation of Calcutta university and later since 1982-83 it was raised to Degree Level College introducing B.Tech in Fibre Technology (Jute), later renamed as B.Tech in Jute and Fibre Technology with AICTE’s approval. M.TechCourse in Textile Technology (Technical Textiles) was introduced from 2005 to promote technical textiles education and research in India. Separate PhD programme in Textile Technology under Calcutta University was introduced in 2007-08 onwards.
After IJMA ‘s withdrawal of Funding to IJT by spindle based subscription from member Jute Mills, the required establishment cost i.e. major funding for this Institute was then made available initially on adhoc basis from JMDC ( a statutory body under Ministry of Textiles of Govt.of India) from 1982-83 and later on five years MOU basis from JMDC (presently JMDC and NCJD two promotional organization was merged and subsumed as National Jute Board called NJB) with approval of Ministry of Textiles from 1992-93 and it continued up to 2010-11 (before this IJT was converted into atechnological department of Calcutta University by State Govt. Order). However, after conversion of IJT as a technological department of Calcutta university, NJB continued its sponsored projects and sponsored industry oriented separate courses in other form and presently NJB is sponsoring one Project on Industry oriented Course i. e. Post B Sc 2 Yrs. P G Diploma in Jute Technology and Management course and other related industrial activities , after conversion of this Institute as a Technological Dept. of Calcutta University since 1st July-2011 ( by W B Govt. Order-no 267/1(1)/EH/1U(C)-11-10 dated 25th May-2011) and subsequent Calcutta University syndicate Notification no. CSR/32/11 dt. 27-06-2011 and reaffirming the same in cabinet decision no 1391 dated 29-08-2013, with the concurrence of Finance Dept. (Group-P2) UO No 787- Gr P (service) dt. 14-05-2013. Vide Letter no 1049 –Edn. (U)/1U(c)-11-10 dated 25th October,2013. Before this Institution was converted as a Dept. of Jute and Fibre Technology of University of Calcutta, this Institute (Erstwhile IJT) was an Autonomous Institute Registered under Societies Registration Act, 1961 and was mainly Funded By Ministry of Textiles,Govt. of India through JMDC/NJB, (a statutory body of Ministry of Textiles , Govt of India for promotion of Jute) and this Institute was managed by a Governing Council (headed by the Honourable Vice Chancellor, Calcutta University following all AICTE norms and pay scale for teachers as ratified by Governing Council and following Rules and Practices of Govt.of West Bengal for Non-Teaching Staff ) consisting of the members from the following organizations :-
Earlier since 1982-83, IJT was fully funded by Ministry of Textiles, Govt of India, through JMDC /NJB, Ministry of Textiles, Govt of India by MOU with JMDC/NJB for covering its full establishment cost as maintenance grant –in aid starting from1982-83 on adhoc basis and from 1990-91 through 5 yearly MOU basis with approval of Ministry of Textiles, Govt of India from non-plan fund of National Jute Board (NJB) [erstwhile JMDC], Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India besides this department receives some additional funds as sponsored projects from AICTE and other Govt.authority and also from JMDC/NJB for R& D or HRD Projects as Govt. sponsored Projects.
Presently after conversion of Institute of Jute Technology as a post graduate technological department of University of Calcutta from 01.07.2011, the University of Calcutta is running its B.Tech, M.Tech and Ph.D courses from University maintenance grant from Govt. of West Bengal and also National Jute Board, Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India is providing project based funding for running Industry oriented Courses like P G Diploma in Jute Technology and Management course and few JLS Courses for Sustainable HRD for Jute Industryby 5 yearly MOU basis (2012-13 to 2016-17) with approval of Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India from non-plan fund of National Jute Board (NJB). This department of University of Calcutta presently running few HRD Training Projects for Jute Sector like, ISDS Project, DCH HRD Project, DCH Survey Project, DCH R&D Project funded by Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India. Recently this department has received five R&D Projects obtained from Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India under special R&D Grants for Jute and Textiles through the office of the Jute Commissioner and The Textile Commissioner, Govt. of India.
Special award/ recognition from UGC or related statutory body : Geotextile Testing Laboratory established after 2011 has received National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) under the aegis of Department of Science & Technology, Government of India, and is registered under the Societies Act. from 2015-16 and it is continuing.Courses offered:
