Academic Departments University of Calcutta

History

Year of Establishment : 1945

History of the department : In 1943, the Inter University Board of India resolved that only graduates from any field would qualify for admission to librarianship courses offered by Indian universities. Around the same period, the University of Calcutta formed a library sub-committee, whose recommendations were considered by the University Syndicate on August 17, 1944. The resolutions included the establishment of an annual Diploma Course in Librarianship, with a one-year curriculum starting in January. Admission was limited to graduates, with an intake of only 15 students per session. The course was overseen by an annually appointed Librarianship Training Committee within the Faculty of Arts, under the administrative control of the Library Department (the University Librarian). The first Diploma in Library Science course commenced in January 1945.

In 1959, this training arrangement separated from the Library Department, creating an independent Faculty for Post-Graduate Studies in Library Science, where the newly established Department of Library Science was placed. In the 1969-70 academic year, the diploma was upgraded to a post-graduate Bachelor of Library Science (B.Lib.Sc.) degree. The department was renamed the Department of Library & Information Science in 1998, with the degree subsequently called the Bachelor of Library & Information Science (BLIS).

From 2010 to 2015-five batches in a row, the department ran India’s first 5-Year Integrated Program in Library & Information Science, along with a pioneering 3-Year Honours Program afterwards. Currently, however, programs like the 1-Year BLIS, 2-Year MLIS, 5-Year Integrated Program, 3-Year Honours Program, and the M.Phil have been discontinued. Now part of the Faculty of Post-Graduate Studies in Journalism, Education, and Library & Information Science, the department currently offers an Integrated Bachelor's and Master’s program in Library and Information Science (B.Lib.I.Sc.-M.Lib.I.Sc.) and a Doctoral degree (PhD) in Library and Information Science.
