History

Year of Establishment : 1925

History of the department :The Department of Applied Physics, University of Calcutta is a forerunner of India in the field of technological education and research. Founded in 1925 under the shroud of pre-independence era, the Department was truly the initiator of research and technological directions in the areas of Advanced Technology spanning over Measurements, Instruments Communication, and Standardization.

From 1925 to 1952, two year M. Sc. degree was offered from Applied Physics. In 1953, it was renamed as M.Sc. (Tech.) in Applied Physics with Specialization in – Measurement & Instrumentation and Electrical Machine & Power System. From 1959, Applied Physics started offering three year M. Tech. with same specializations as with M.Sc. (Tech.). Three year Post B. Sc. B. Tech. course in Applied Physics commenced from 1969 in Measurement & Instrumentation and Electrical Machine & Power System. From 1989, Applied Physics started offering three year B. Tech. in – Instrumentation Engineering and Electrical Engineering. Three year Post B. Sc. B. Tech. Tech. in Instrumentation Engineering was set off from 1994 and lastly from 2015 onwards, four year eight semester B. Tech. in Instrumentation Engineering has been initiated.
